The open upright MRI scan can take between 20 minutes to over an hour to complete. This depends on the part of the body being imaged and what type of MRI is required to show the information. Before the scan begins, the MRI technologists will tell you how long the scan takes, so you know what to expect. If your exam requires contrast, you can expect your open MRI to last approximately one hour. If your doctor orders your MRI without contrast, it can take anywhere from 20-45 minutes. Brain and neck scans usually take 25-40 minutes. For your brain and neck you will be in the open MRI machine 25-30 minutes. When your doctor orders any joints, (shoulder, knee, hip, ankle, etc) you can expect the open MRI scan to take 35-45 minutes. If your doctor has ordered multiple exams, we have to image one body part at a time. Multiple exams will take longer.
